How to Grow and Care for Rose Bushes

Roses carry special meaning with each color.  Colorful roses beautifies your house with their pretty shape and sweet scent. A properly maintained and cared for rose garden will produce blooms whole year round in Singapore.

Growing rose bushes is easy and rewarding. A mostly sunny location and a little gardening basics is all you need to get started.

There are many types of roses available in garden centers, so it's important to choose the correct one for your particular situation.

Wild Roses
These are the parent roses of all other roses, found growing in the wild. Most have small single flowers with five petals. The colors are normally pink, yellow or white rose. Wild roses are very hardy and grow as largish bushes or climbers.

OLD GARDEN ROSES
These are hybrid roses which have been bred by crossing different species of wild roses. The flowers tend to be very large and easily damaged by wind and rain - as a rule though they are highly scented. The China rose is a well known old garden hybrid which produces a succession of flowers throughout summer. Other hybrids such as Rosa alba produce a single flush. In general, these roses are neither tough nor easy to grow - they are for real rose lovers.

MINIATURE ROSE
With varying heights up to 45cm (18in), the miniature rose is an ideal plants for pots, rockeries and the front of the border. Their petite size may look good indoors, but they will only survive a short time in the dry, warm conditions. If you do take them indoors, restrict it to a month or so, keep them in a cool airy room and spray them with water at least daily.

Buying Your Rose
Your roses can be bought in containers from any nurseries or neighborhood florists. Choose the healthy plants when buying.  The leaves should be healthy-looking with no black blotches (black spot) on them. Make sure the size of the plant is roughly one and a half to two times the height of the pot. If it is any larger, reject the plant because it has been in the pot too long and may be root-bound. The soil should be moist rather than dry.

Planting Roses
Roses prefer a site in full sun, but will be successful in partial shade, especially if the shade is during the afternoon. The best soil will be free-draining, slightly acid and medium in texture - neither sandy nor clayey.

Caring For Your Roses
Roses are not fussy plants, but it still need to be taken care of.

Pruning Your Roses
Roses are very tolerant plants, and with a little care will flourish for many years.

Roses grow by producing new shoots, the upper part dieing off after a couple of years. When the upper part of a stem dies, the lower part produces a new shoot which then goes through the same cycle. If a rose is not pruned, it will turn into a mass of live and dead stems, preventing the circulation of air and cutting out light.

Pruning removes old wood, thus allowing air and light to reach all parts of the plant - this  helps prevent disease and insects

Feeding Roses
The best method of feeding is to use a fertilizer designed for roses such as 'TopRose', however, any general purpose fertilizer will do the job.

Growing Your Roses-Propagating Roses
Taking a cutting from an existing bush is by far the most common method of propagating roses. This is the easiest way to propagate plants for you own rose garden at little cost. Although you can do it, growing new rose bushes from seed, is largely in the realm of commercial growers and horticulturalists. We will focus upon the first method.

Choose a few of the older and hardy stems from a healthy rose plant, The stems should include at least three buds, Make a sloping cut just above the selected top bud. Make a horizontal cut juts below the selected bottom bud. Ensure that the buds are pointing upwards, Simply push the cutting stems into a  container with a small patch of soil and gently firm the soil down around the cutting, water it daily and keep away from strong direct sunlight.

The success rate of cuttings can be low for a number of reasons, especially for new and inexperienced growers. Check on your new rose bush every several days to make sure there is enough moisture in the soil. Remember, the new roots will not be deep. Don't be hurry to transplant to a new container even you see the new shoot coming up.

Do not worry if the shoot appears dormant for a while. All of the activity is really happening underground. It is focusing upon developing a root system, and does not have the energy or root support to develop new growth. After a couple of weeks, the shoot will begin to grow.

Once the new rose bush has begun to grow, you can now move the alive stems to a new container. Follow normal care and maintenance for the new bush from this point forward.

Propagation from Seeds:
Yes, like other flowers roses produce seeds. Many people are not aware of this, as the rooting of cuttings is by far the most popular way of propagating new rose bushes.

Leave a spent rose on the bush, and around bulb-like "Rose Hip" will form. The seeds are inside of the rose hip.
